JOB SUMMARY

Transporting students to and from school and other activities in a safe and efficient manner. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

1. High school diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education.

2. 18 years of age or older. 

3. Type 20 license or willing to get licensed.

4. Ability to work harmoniously with others and to communicate effectively (both orally & in writing) with students, parents, and staff.

5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of students and their records.

7. Ability to demonstrate standards of moral character & behavior to serve as an effective role model for students

8. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff.

9. Drives a type 20 bus or van on an assigned route. 

10. Loads and unloads students at specific stops on an established time schedule with the utmost regard for safety

11. Checks vehicle gas, oil, signals, wipers, brakes, lights, water, and other components to assure proper levels and/or operation before each trip.

12. Records gas, oil, and mileage readings.

13. Keeps vehicle clean inside and out.

14. Does not drive more than ten total hours during any consecutive fifteen-hour period.

15. Must be willing and able to drive on weekends and during nighttime hours occasionally.

16. Drives bus on special trips outside the district.

17. Maintains discipline on bus and reports discipline problems according to district policy and procedures. 

18. Attends classes and training to keep license current.

19. Reports traffic violations related to school bus operation to city, county, or state police agencies.

20. Abides by federal and state laws and school district policies, procedures, and rules.

21. Makes provision for a responsible person to guard the rear of buses when backing up on school grounds.

22. Participate in in-service training as assigned.

23. Act as a friendly ambassador for the St. Paul School District. 

24. Perform such other duties (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may be assigned. Abides by federal and state laws and school district policies, procedures, and rules.

25. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with the community and staff.

26. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.   

27. Complies with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.

28. Attends work regularly and is punctual.

29. Perform such other duties (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as may be assigned.            

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Interpersonal Skills:  Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on resolving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening attentively to others without interrupting, controlling emotions, remaining open to others’ ideas, and contributing to a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to multitask and work with staff, students, and parents.
  • Language Skills:  Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.    Ability to respond effectively to questions in one-on-one and small group situations with students and other school staff.  Ability to verbally respond to common inquiries from students, staff, parents, District patrons, and the general public. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.
  • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.  
  • Computer Skills:  Some knowledge of computer usage and ability to use accounting software, database software, internet software, e-mail, spreadsheets, and word processing software. Ability to proficiently use the following programs strongly preferred: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and other student databases—ability to type accurately and proficiently. 
  • Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents, and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions. 
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Certificates as determined by the District. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card and a Type 20 License.
